Homework:
Homework will be assigned generally on a weekly basis; sent home on a Wednesday or Thursday and due back by the next Tuesday. Assignments will be related to classroom topics and skills. Consideration is also given to academic abilities. This year, there will be times when the assignments will be posted in the Google Classroom.
Language Arts
The students will be exploring many different ways to demonstrate reading, writing, speaking and listening outcomes. They will be using the workshop model for reading and writing. Listening and speaking skills permeate all areas of the grade three curriculum everyday.
Students will be expected to demonstrate different forms of writing, such as jot notes, friendly letters, personal narratives, book reviews, realistic fiction, persuasive writing, poetry, etc. They will read a diverse collection of children's literature for the purpose of reading for pleasure and reading to gain new information. They will have weekly opportunities to choose material at their "Just Right" reading level as well as choosing materials of personal interest. Language skills will be further developed through the integration of other subject areas; including technology (ie: working on Chromebooks).
Word Study (spelling, sound-symbol development) and Cursive Handwriting are also part of the Language Arts program.
Mathematics
Students will be reviewing and exploring a variety of different mathematical concepts to foster not only a love of math, but also a firm foundation for the future. Lots of “hands-on” materials, partners and small groups will also help develop this year’s math skills.
Term 1 - represent, compare, partition numbers to 1000, variety of skip counting from different starting points, strategies for basic addition and subtracting facts to 18, increasing/decreasing patterns, passage of time/calendar skills, values of coins, 2-D shapes and 3-D solid characteristics
Term 2 – data collection, read and construct bar graphs and line plots, extend place value to 1000, perimeter of shapes, measurement (cm, m, g, kg), add/subtract estimate sums and differences, collection, organizing, interpreting data by creating line plots, tallies in charts, simple fraction situations, geometry/patterning continued, estimation addition/subtraction of 3-digit numbers
Term 3 - multiplication/division (wide range of strategies for facts up to 5 x 5), skip counting reinforced, describe fractions of a whole, comparing fractions of the same whole with like denominators, apply mental adding and subtracting 2-digit number strategies, apply adding and subtracting estimation strategies for up to 3-digit numbers
Note: Mental math and estimation skills are part of all three terms.
Integrated Science
Term 1 – Materials and Structures
Term 2 – Invisible Forces: Magnetism
Term 3 – Plant Growth and Changes, Soil
Science is an information based program to peak the scientific exploration for children. It is also an individual hands-on program where possible.
Integrated Social Studies
Term 1 – Exploring the Atlantic region, locating Nova Scotia, bodies of water surrounding NS,
examining the origins of diverse peoples and cultures
Term 2- Take action to promote positive interactions among people, ideas for action plans,
research cultures
Term 3 –Examining the rights and responsibilities of
citizens in democracy, analyzing group decision making; connection to treaties
Integrated Health
Term 1- Communicating ways to manage difficulties in friendships when they arise in different settings
Term 2 – Recognizing, discussing and identifying decisions that affect physical, social, mental and emotional health.
Term 3 – Investigating ways for seeking help in unsafe risk scenarios (at home, online and substances)
Integrated Communication Technology
Digital citizenship, research skills and problem solving will be fostered throughout the year.
Integrated Visual Arts
We will explore visual arts through learning the principles of art and design and create art pieces that express personal feelings/ideas. They will learn to reflect upon and develop a respect for art and art-making. A broad range of Nova Scotia artists of different cultures will be explored.
Assessment and Evaluation
Assessment is the process of gathering, from a variety of sources, information that accurately reflects how well a student is achieving the learning outcomes in a subject or course.
Assessment Tools are the instruments that teachers use to gather information about student achievement. Examples of assessment tools include but are not limited to work samples, presentations, tests/quizzes, portfolios, demonstrations, anecdotal notes, and observations.
Evaluation is the process of analyzing, reflecting upon, and summarizing assessment information and making judgments and/or decisions based upon the information gathered (e.g. to determine student achievement of the learning outcomes for the purposes of grading and reporting).
There are three reporting periods and two formal opportunities to discuss your child's progress during parent-teacher meetings.
Grading Scale of Individual Assignments to Monitor Growth

2 – Basic Understanding 1 – Limited Understanding
Report Card Developmental Grades are only given to math, speaking/listening, reading and writing.
